BELDING - Forest Hills Northern's boys soccer team used great ball control and a solid defensive effort against the Belding Redskins on Tuesday evening.
The Huskies scored 10 first half goals en route to a 10-0 O-K Blue Conference triumph over Belding at Rudness Field.
"Forest Hills Northern is a very good possession team. You can see how well they control, pass and move the ball up and down the field," said Belding coach Blaine Kemme. "They have excellent skills at every position on the field. They work very good as a unit on the field."
Senior Grant Juth gave the Huskies a 1-0 lead early with a goal just 2:57 into the contest. Freshman Morris Kamara made the score 2-0 on a penalty kick just 1:38 later.
Scott Dunwell made the score 3-0 with 30:33 left in the first half and mere moments later Juth scored his second goal of the game and the Huskies were in charge 4-0.
Derek Novosad scored two goals while Juth, Cam Vela, Robbie Schermer and Islam Hoxha each added one goal during the rest of the game to set the final score.
The game ended after the first half via the mercy rule. The first half of a game is played no matter the score. But once a team has an eight goal lead anytime after halftime the game ends, hence the mercy rule.
"Offensively we really wanted to work on counter-attacking and scoring goals. We were shutout our last game against West Catholic," said Forest Hills Northern coach Dan Lipon. "So we wanted to focus on scoring a lot of goals and being real sharp offensively and I think we accomplished that tonight."
Kemme saw some things from his Redskin squad that he is hoping they can build upon.
"The positive for us in this match was that we generated some offense and had some shots. The past few games we were lucky to get any shots on net," Kemme said. "Tonight we had four or five good opportunities, we just could not capitalize on them. We need to work on our defense too."
Belding fell to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the league.
The Redskins will travel to Sparta on Thursday for a league clash with the Spartans.
Forest Hills Northern improved to 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference
